MMA - Why it's bad and what to use instead
Getting your nails done is a fun, relaxing experience for most people. Finally, you have an opportunity to take a break from your daily routine and do something just for you. But before you start catching up with your regular nail technician, be sure to confirm one thing: do they use MMA acrylic?
MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) is a type of monomer liquid commonly found in many professional nail products in the ‘60s and ‘70s. This liquid acid is meant to activate the acrylic powder to help it adhere to your nails. Nail technicians preferred this ingredient because it was cheap and strong. However, it was also extremely dangerous. We’re talking rapid infections and permanent nail damage, resulting in nail loss. In fact, the FDA eventually banned it after many people filed complaints. You’re probably thinking that’s all in the past. Right? Wrong. Unfortunately, many nail salons still use the toxic monomer, so we’re sharing our tips for detecting the use of MMA on your nails and why you should opt for the better alternative EMA.
4 Ways to Recognize MMA Acrylics
- 1. Your Nails Are Cheap - Price is one of the main indicators of MMA. While low costs are typically something to celebrate, that isn’t always the case regarding acrylics. If a set of acrylic nails is significantly cheaper than other salons, you should be wary. Since MMA liquid is so inexpensive, salons can get away with lower prices.
- 2. Your Nails Smell - If you get a whiff of a strong fishy (or cat urine-like) fragrance when you lift your hand, you may be exposed to MMA. The smell is even more pungent when your nail tech applies the acrylic - a dead giveaway that the nail annihilator is present.
- 3. Unlabeled Products - Pay attention to the products your nail tech is using. For example, if the acrylic liquid and powders are unlabeled, you should tread with caution. This is because shady salons don’t want customers to research ingredients and find anything unsavory, like melted nail beds and skin irritation.
- 4. You Feel a Bit Off - Another way to determine whether you’ve been exposed to MMA is to evaluate how you feel during the application. Dizziness and light-headedness have been reported as side effects of MMA. Additionally, if you notice your skin is becoming red, itchy, or swollen, that could be another indication of MMA, and you should notify your doctor.
What is EMA? How can I tell if I have EMA acrylics?
Fortunately, you don’t have to risk such unfavorable consequences for a cute set of nails. If you want to maintain the health of your nails, EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate) is the way to go. It serves the same purpose as MMA but doesn’t cause nearly as much damage, as it more securely adheres to the surface of the natural nail, eliminating the need to thin the nail plate. To reinforce its reliability, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review approved it in 1999 as the most effective alternative to MMA.
While EMA is not as strong as its more toxic counterpart, you’ll notice EMA acrylics feel far more comfortable on your nails. It also doesn't emit the notorious “fishy” smell commonly associated with MMA.
Below are 3 ways to tell if your salon is using EMA
3 Ways to Recognize EMA Acrylics
- 1. Your Nails Are More Expensive - Just like with MMA Acrylic, EMA acrylic will typically be more expensive and will likely be upwards of $50 or more to have done.
- 2. Your Acrylic Nails Come Off In Acetone - Unlike MMA, EMA will soak off in acetone. When EMA makes contact with acetone for 15 to 20 minutes you will notice it will start to "crumple" off or become "gummy" and can easily be scrapped off of your natural nail. This makes EMA far more safer for your nails.
- 3. Licensed Salon - While this does not guarantee that your salon does not use MMA, generally speaking your state will inspect the salon to make sure they are using legal products. Considering that MMA is illegal to use and can result in fines, most reputable salons will use EMA products.
